SILKIE CHICKENS
We absolutely love Silkie chickens. They are such a fascinating, adorable and endearing breed. The history of the Silkie chicken is just as unique as the birds themselves, stretching back centuries to ancient Asia.
In China, they are known as Wu Gu Ji, which means black-boned chicken. This points to a really cool genetic trait called fibromelanosis, which causes an overproduction of dark pigment. It turns their skin, muscles, organs, and even their bones black. Because of this, they are culturally important in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Beyond their history and biology, Silkies are just a joy to have in your yard. Because they are true bantams, they take up much less space than standard chickens and eat less feed. Silkie hens lay smaller, cream-colored eggs that have a higher proportion of yolk, making them rich in flavor, creamy in texture, and great for baking. Most of all, Silkies are celebrated for being the absolute sweetest, most docile, and friendly little chickens you could ever own. They genuinely love to cuddle, making them wonderful for kids and perfect backyard pets.
They do require a little bit of specialized care compared to standard chickens. Their big, beautiful head poofs can block their vision, making it hard for them to see predators or causing them to startle easily, so many chicken tenders trim the fluff around their eyes or use hair ties. Also, their unique feathers act more like hair and lack the hooks that make normal chicken feathers waterproof. If a Silkie gets wet in the rain, it can’t dry itself off and has to be brought inside to be thoroughly towel-or-blow-dried so it doesn't get hypothermia. We feel this extra care is a small price to pay for keeping these delightful little chickens.
We don't raise hatchery-sourced birds, as our goal is to breed healthy, stable lines for exhibition. Right now, we split our flock into two separate groups: a traditional blue, black, and splash line, and a separate color project where we are working with mauve and chocolate.
We sell straight run chicks for $10 each. We also have five-to-six-month-old started birds available, with pullets priced at $50 each and roosters at $25 each. Spaces fill up fast, so please email us today to reserve your birds!
