If you're looking for a fresh homesteading choice, New Zealand rabbits are hard to beat for sustainability. With a humane breeding schedule, a single New Zealand doe can comfortably produce between 70 and 120 pounds of clean, dressed meat annually. By spacing out litters to four or five times a year—allowing the doe to fully wean her kits and rest between pregnancies—she can sustainably raise 28 to 35 fryers to a harvest weight of 5 pounds each. Because New Zealand rabbits have an exceptional dress-out yield of up to 60%, they convert feed into high-quality protein more efficiently than larger livestock.
