EMBDEN GEESE

Of all the poultry we have ever raised, geese are hands down the smartest—we like to call them the "parrots of poultry." If you've fallen for the popular myth that geese are naturally mean, our Embdens will completely change your mind. When raised with plenty of handling and love, these birds are incredibly friendly, fun, and affectionate. They are highly intelligent, curious creatures that love figuring out toys they can pick apart and work at. They'll follow you around the yard like dogs, completely fascinated by whatever project you are working on. Beyond their wonderful personalities, they are absolutely beautiful to look at, with their pristine white feathers and striking blue eyes.

We settled on the Embden breed because they excel in every single category on the homestead. One of the biggest perks is that they are what I refer to as "dry waterfowl." Unlike ducks, they don't make muddy messes and this makes them incredibly clean and easy to care for. They are also exceptionally feed-efficient because a significant portion of their diet is grass. While they spend their days grazing, they double as excellent backyard watchdogs. There's a reason the ancient Romans used geese as sentries.

When it comes to production, Embdens are truly unmatched. Our hens lay around 50 enormous eggs each year. These eggs are massive and similar to duck eggs but with even bigger, richer yolks. Because of their fast growth rate, large size, and white feathers, Embdens are the most common breed of goose used for commercial meat production. Their white feathering ensures a beautifully clean carcass without any of the dark pinfeathers left behind by other breeds. The meat itself is mild, wonderfully fatty, and has a rich flavor that reminds us of bacon.
